Location and Contact Information

Our office is located on Playa Azul and faces downton Manzanillo (Centro) and the beautiful Manzanillo Bay. In the winter months whales can be seen breaching the surface of the water. The bay is favorite for the mother whales to train their babies.

This picturesque setting is an exclusive to Leonardt Dental Practice as all all other dental practices in Manzanillo are located away from the beach. Our philosophy of pain-free dentistry starts with a relaxing view.

If you are familiar with Manzanillo, our office is located at Calle del Mar 1781A. Drive to the traffic circle with the "El Velero monument" on Blvd. Miguel de la Madrid, continue on Gral. Lázaro Cárdenas for 1.5 blocks and turn right. Drive to Calle Del Mar (one block) and turn right. We are located in the second building on the left side of the road.

Dental Cleaning

Dental plaque is a sticky, colorless film that continually forms in between and on the surface of the teeth. It is a biofilm that is made up of microorganisms such as streptococcus mutans and other bacteria. It can develop on teeth above the gum line (supragingival), below the gum line on the roots of teeth (subgingival) and along the gum line (gingival).

If dental plaque accumulates and is not removed, it can harden and turn into calculus or tartar.

How Can You Remove Dental Plaque?

If your gums appear healthy – with no inflammation or redness – then twice daily brushing and proper daily flossing will break up the plaque that naturally accumulates on your teeth. Brushing with a fluoride-based toothpaste will help to remove it from the surfaces of your teeth and floss or interdental cleaners will help to remove it between your teeth. If you notice that your gums are red and inflamed, or that they bleed after you brush your teeth, it is important that you see your dentist.

Gingivitis and early periodontitis can be controlled by routine professional teeth cleanings and more diligent brushing and flossing at home. If your dental professional observes an excessive buildup of plaque and calculus below the gum line, then scaling and/or a procedure called root planing may be necessary. This non-surgical procedure is used to remove plaque and calculus from around the roots of teeth and in the gum pockets.

Scaling and root planing is performed in your dentist’s office.

Odontology

A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to remove diseased pulp tissue from the interior of a tooth. The narrow channels beneath the pulp chamber in the inner part of the tooth are hollowed out and cleaned, and the roots are filed with flexible nickel titanium files. Root canal therapy restores and saves an average of 17 million teeth each year. Keep your tooth and stop the pain – sounds better than a tooth extraction, right?

A tooth is made up of three main components: a hard protective shell referred to as enamel, a softer and sensitive middle layer referred to as dentin and a soft tissue inner layer referred to as dental pulp. Dental pulp is composed of nerve tissue, lymph tissue and blood vessels, and is considered to be the vital part of a tooth. If dental pulp is sufficiently traumatized – whether by exposure to oral bacteria via deep dental caries, a fracture in the tooth that enters the pulp or a forceful blow to the face – the tooth begins to die and root canal therapy is often required in order to prevent or eliminate infection and prevent tooth loss.

A root canal procedure involves tooth disinfection and the removal of all debris (nerve tissue, lymph tissue, blood tissue, bacteria and infection) from the coronal pulp chamber and its associated canals. Once an affected tooth’s canals are sufficiently cleansed and shaped, they are filled with materials designed to prevent pain and infection from recurring.

Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots used to support a restoration for a missing tooth or teeth, helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. The implantation procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry, but also is considered a form of cosmetic dentistry.

Extractions

When it comes to dental procedures, tooth extraction — or having teeth “pulled” — is among patients’ most dreaded prospects. Also referred to as exodontia, tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. Before any extraction, every effort will be made to try to repair and restore your tooth. However, sometimes it’s necessary.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dentist

Find out how long the practice has been in operation.

Ask about the extent of the dentist’s training and clinical experience in performing the specific procedure you may require.

If the dentist does not perform certain procedures, ask about his/her referral process.

Before committing yourself to a dentist, identify all the procedure options that would solve your cosmetic dental concern. Ask about the pros and cons of each option.

Ask about the type of emergency care offered. For example, is the dentist available after hours and on weekends?

If your needs include cosmetic dentistry procedures, ask to see before-and-after photos of previous patients. Bring a photo of the result you would like to see or a picture of yourself before the need for cosmetic dentistry to help set a reasonable expectation for your procedure’s outcome.

Determine dental costs prior to treatment. Dental cost totals should include procedure fees, anesthesia fees, and facility fees. Is the office located nearby? This could be important if your procedures require frequent or multiple visits.

Is the dental team friendly and courteous? You may not want to see a dentist long term if you don’t feel comfortable with his/her team.

Odontologist

I was born in Bonn, Germany. Because of my fathers’ profession, our family moved and experienced living in many interesting parts of the world. Some of these countries included India, Brazil, Australia and Spain. This unique opportunity allowed me to experience and learn about different cultures, their educational systems and also to learn English, German and Spanish which I speak fluently. In order to finish our high school degrees, my brother and I returned to Bonn, Germany. I graduated from high school with top honors, A-grade Latinum and decided to become a dentist. I chose the University of Bonn since it is one of the best universities in the field of dentistry and assured me excellent development of my skills as a dentist. I graduated from the Rhine-Friedrich-Wilhelm University of Bonn in the top 3 of my class with an A-grade. I moved to the state of Bavaria in Southern Germany to work in Altötting, a small city located one hour east of Munich. At the private Loibl Dental Practice I completed my two year residency focusing on Endodontology. My four years of experience at Loibl Dental Practice gave me a wonderfully comprehensive experience that was versatile and well-rounded. My doctoral dissertation at the TUM University of Munich was also completed during this time. German dentistry has a world-wide reputation for its’ training excellence and high standards. Therefore I am very grateful for my four years of professional experience in Germany. I have brought this excellent training and experience to my practice here in Manzanillo, Mexico. I truly enjoy consulting and helping my patients by providing them with all the information they need in order to give them the best possible dental care available. Once we have decided together on the best options for care, I look forward to applying my experience with a gentle and pain-free approach.
